Jay Nagel Obituary

Jerome "Jay" Edwin Nagel Jr., 52, left our earthly kitchen to cook up a storm in the celestial realm on August 8, 2023, in Mesa, AZ. Jay, the ultimate free spirit, had a zest for life that couldn't be measured!
With his love for nature, monsoons, and desert storms, Jay knew how to make each day a masterpiece. He lived life in its simplest and purest form - always fully present while appreciating every single moment.
This culinary aficionado had a heart as big as his appetite. Jay never hesitated to lend a helping whisk (total pun intended!). Whether it was offering an ear to listen or serving up a delicious meal, he aimed to turn frowns upside down like a perfectly blended spinach dip.
We'd be remiss not to mention Jay's impressive seven years of sobriety from drugs! Overcoming homelessness and addiction provided him with a crystal-clear view of life's flavors. From Florida's streets to Arizona's scorching sands, Jay journeyed back home to find his calling - running a kitchen that was more than just a job, but a masterpiece in itself!
It breaks our hearts (and possibly appetite) to share that he has passed away after a valiant fight against a rare form of cancer. Jay leaves behind his son Jordan, loving parents, three brothers, three sisters, nieces, nephews & his confidant and most cherished best friend in which he shared a deep unbreakable bond, Jenifer V.
Ah, the keys to Jay's success were turning crispy, like his morning toast, as they unlocked memorable adventures in various kitchens. Whether it was the flavor infused Marble Canyon in Arizona or the incredible Railroad 10 in Vermont, Jay knew he was at home where the pots and pans sizzled with divine creations. And let's not forget The Moose Lodge, his sanctuary where good eats met good times!
When it came to soul-nourishment and spirituality, Jay found solace amidst backyard fire-pit gatherings. Those warm flames and amazing company ignited friendships that would last beyond this lifetime. Fahrenheit or Celsius, Jay's loved ones knew they could always gather around him to feel the heat of his love and passion for life.
During his "meals-on-wheels" downtime, Jay embraced the art of floating on the river as a way to clear his mind and experience life's currents. And don't even get us started on his love for sipping ice-cold beers with his incredible circle of friends. To him, it was an essential part of the recipe for a remarkable time!
In joyful compliance with Jays wishes, a traditional funeral service won't be held. Instead, a spectacular Celebration of his vibrant life will take place on Friday, October 13, 2023 @ 4pm. The East Mesa Moose Lodge located at 7402 E Baseline Rd in Mesa Az 85209 will graciously be hosting this special occasion. So please join us as we raise a glass and toast to his colorful spirit while remembering the good times, smile and endless energy of Jay.
In honor of Jay's memory, his loved one's kindly request contributions be made to the Mission House of Jax Beach in Jacksonville, Florida. Let's carry forward his legacy of compassion and support towards those in need!
May Jay Nagel's irrepressible spirit continue to spice up our lives and may his zest for living live on in each bite we savor. Rest easy, dear chef - you've earned a five-star spot in our food-filled hearts, you will be forever missed & never forgotten.
